Southern California- LA, Orange County, and San Diego

Updated: Jan 21

This summer I went to Southern California to visit friends and family as well as to discover all of the gluten free bakery and restaurant gems hidden inside Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. I wanted to be able to share with the world all of my findings in these beautiful places that resemble paradise.

These are the sweet and colorful adventures I had:

In Malibu...

Los Angeles

Santa Monica, CA

My trip was off to a sweet start to say the least...

Beaming

At Beaming, you MUST try their vibrant Pitaya Bowl: It's made from pink dragon fruit which is one of my favorite fruits, ever. Delicious!

Rising Hearts Bakery

When at Rising Hearts Bakery, be sure to try their Matcha Cheesecake like I did!

Powerplant Superfood Café

At PowerPlant Superfood Café, you can be served a fresh, warm, and delicious Cinnamon Bun and be able to enjoy it right outside their café:

Erin McKenna’s Bakery

When visiting Erin Mckenna's pretty in pastel pink bakery, I went straight for their flavor of the day cupcake which was a very sweet Strawberry Lemonade Cupcake. I also had to try their heart-shaped Coconut Treat. So sweet:

Honey Hi

Look at Honey Hi's menu: All 100% gluten free (there's even a whole back side to this menu too... go check it out!) There are so many items to choose from!

Ultimately, I had to go with the sweetest thing I could find on their menu. So I ordered their Mochi Pancakes topped with raspberry-lemon compote, matcha, coconut whipped cream, and honey toppings. Best pancakes I have ever been served.

Cocobella Creamery

You want to talk about a 100% gluten free and vegan ice creamery with all the popular trending flavors out there? This is your go-to ice cream place that has them all.

What's better than to walk into an ice cream shop that offers flavors that you can’t buy gluten free anywhere? To top that off... you can have your ice cream and eat it with a cone too at Cocobella Creamery. I really couldn’t have asked for more. As for which flavors I chose... I ordered their Birthday Cake and Unicorn Magic flavors, which was loaded with marshmallows and sprinkles and a whole lot of happiness.

Oh... and some macarons to make it an even sweeter experience :)

Kippy’s Ice Cream Shop

Kippy’s has a fun, cool, beachy vibe inside their store. Yes, another dedicated gluten free ice cream shop in the LA area. Perfection.

I enjoyed my pink Strawberry Cream ice cream with toppings of cacao nibs and goji berries on these lovely little blue tables and chairs they have outside their shop. It made for a colorful experience. So adorable!

Pomegranate

Shojin

So, there are two different restaurants I ate at quite often as well. The first restaurant is called Pomegranate. The second restaurant is called Shojin.

*Though Pomegranate is no longer open, I still wanted to make an honorable mention here because I absolutely loved this place!

Green Tea Mousse Cake and Strawberry Shortcake can be enjoyed at Shojin since Pomegranate is no longer open. You can see these beautifully prepared pastries filled with cake, mousse, and sweet filling below. I am so impressed with their pastry chef and how beautifully everything is prepared at these restaurants. Lovely!

When you eat at Shojin, be sure to try their rainbow sushi and miso soup along with their desserts! If you are gluten free, you must know how hard it is to find an authentic 100% gluten free Japanese restaurant. Well, Shojin is the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to! They are focused on health where they serve all gluten free, vegan, and macrobiotic foods that also come garlic and onion free– what more could I ask for in a restaurant? 5 star approval from me.

San Diego Area

2Good2B Bakery and Café

2Good2B Bakery & Cafeé is a little north of San Diego, located in Encinitas, CA and just a little south of LA.

2Good2B Bakery & Café offers a wide variety of baked goods with a sweet presentational display.

Like, cupcakes GALORE, you all! I mean, just look at the amount of cupcakes and other desserts they have!

I couldn't decide what to choose, but ultimately I went with their Raspberry Mini Bundt Cake with a blue icing flower on top as seen above. Rich and tasty.

Healthy Creations Café

AND

Nectarine Grove

After I stopped at 2Good2B Bakery & Café, I went onto find lunch and some more baked goodies! I found this gluten free restaurant and bakery gem called Healthy Creations Café which serves some of the best food you'll ever have in your life. They also have a sister restaurant called Nectarine Grove, another incredible 100% gluten free establishment where you can order Chicken and Waffles. I really couldn't have asked for better.

When you eat at Healthy Creations, be sure to try their Avocado and Hummus Toast as well as their Turkey and Brie Sandwich with Fries.

Now on to do some exploring...

Look at these colorful guitars...

And these beautiful bowls COLORED IN FLOWERS...

The beautiful, relaxing view of Sunset Cliffs:

Now onto some more sweet eats!

Starry Lane Bakery:

I enjoyed their Neapolitan Cupcake which was a special cupcake they had which was a mix of vanilla and chocolate cake with creamy strawberry frosting. It was rich, creamy, and delicious just like ice cream.

Sensitive Sweets

Located in Orange County, CA is a lovely bakery called Sensitive Sweets. What I really liked about this bakery was the pastel color theme. It made for a colorful experience.

Year round gingerbread men cookies? Yes. Love it!

Here was my breakfast, actually: theirVanilla Iced Rainbow Sprinkle Donut with a cup of coffee.

Followed by a Vanilla Cake Push Up Pop:

Not the healthiest way to eat breakfast, but most certainly, a sweet way to end a great trip!

Southern California is such a beautiful and dreamy place to be. I am extremely impressed with the amount of dedicated gluten free restaurants and bakeries there are in Southern California and I cannot wait to come back and enjoy them all again.

More trips soon to come.

Love,

Ariel
