DIY Gluten Free Pink Sugar Lips Cookies: Colored in Flour x Red Apple Lipstick

Updated: Jul 4

Think of today as a treat yourself kind of day.

Think of today as a day of beauty, a day of pampering, and a day that will entail of delighting in sugar cookies. Sounds like a pretty sweet day!

Today's DIY Baking Craft is inspiration taken from pink lipstick- my favorite color! One of my favorite things in the entire world is lipstick.

When it comes to choosing a brand of lipstick for myself, I like to look for brands that I know I can feel beautiful and confident in wearing their products all day long. More importantly, the very first thing that I look for in a brand of lipstick, is if it is gluten free. It is important to me that I find a lipstick that is gluten free, because I am a person living with Celiac Disease.

If you aren't already familiar with the brand already, allow me introduce you to Red Apple Lipstick!

Made with high quality ingredients that are allergen-free, paraben-free, lead-free, soy free, cruelty-free, and are enriched with Vitamin E, their lipsticks will moisturize and give you that glow of radiance while providing a beautiful color on your lips so you can feel beautiful and confident all day long. When I wear their lipsticks, I feel so beautiful, confident, and also worry-free because I know that what I am putting onto my lips is gluten free.

My favorite shades of Red Apple Lipstick are mentioned below within this post. To represent each color of my favorite shade of lipstick in this post, I made a batch of cookies using my favorite sugar cookie mix, prepared some royal icing, mixed various gel food colors together into my royal icing until I created colors that closely resembled each shade of my favorite lipstick colors. So, this DIY is basically a fun representation of my favorite shades of Red Apple Lipstick. I had an amazing opportunity to collaborate with them in creating this post and I couldn't be more excited than to share some of my favorite lipsticks of theirs with you and how I created these cookies.

You will need the following on this day of beauty, pampering, and indulging in sugar cookies:

πŸ’„ πŸͺ 1 box of your favorite gluten free sugar cookie mix (I recommend Sun Flour Mills) plus additional ingredients needed to bake cookies as stated on packaging

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Round Cookie Cutter (I used a 3" round with ruffled edges)

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Cookie Baking Sheet Tray lined with parchment paper

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Cookie rolling pin

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Six Small Glass Mixing Bowls

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Spatulas for Mixing

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Pastry Piping Bags

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Royal Icing Tool

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Gluten Free Meringue Powder for Royal Icing (plus additional ingredients necessary to make royal icing- most likely confectioner's sugar and water)

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Gel food color (Americolor is gluten free and I used: Soft Pink, Plum, Regal Purple, Orange, Fuchsia, Chocolate Brown, Electric Pink, Burgundy, and Super Red- please refer to each color below with it's coinciding picture to determine how to make all the shades)

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Pink Fondant (Satin Ice is gluten free)

πŸ’„ πŸͺ Lips Fondant Cutters (the ones I used I purchased on Etsy and they are in 2" sizes and other various sizes as well)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Bake your cookies according to package instructions. While the cookies are baking, prepare your royal icing according to package instructions on the back of the meringue powder packaging.

2. Divide the royal icing into six different small glass mixing bowls and add drops of food color to each. To make all the colors, simply follow the instructions below where you see an image of a single cookie with its coinciding shade of lipstick to match the colors.

3. Add the achieved colors of royal icing to pastry piping bags and pipe each color onto your cookies. (Refer to image below)

4. Follow along the outer edge of the cookie with your pastry piping bag and continue going around the outer edges of the cookie until you fill the entire cookie with royal icing. Repeat for every color and cookie. Use your royal icing tool to help fill in any shapes of uneven icing areas (refer to image below)

5. When the royal icing on your cookies have hardened, you can add your pink fondant lips to the center of the cookies. The fondant lips will stick best to the tops of the cookies with a tiny drop of royal icing added to the back of the fondant. To make the fondant lips, simply roll out your fondant to 1/8" thick on a countertop surface lightly dusted with cornstarch and use fondant lips cutters to make the shapes with. If fondant dries out, use a tiny bit of vegetable shortening to get a workable texture again.

6. Serve and enjoy! They are absolutely delicious!
